How Should a T-Shirt Fit? A Practical Guide to Choosing Your Size

A T-shirt fits well when it gives you the shape and freedom of movement you want. Some people prefer a closer silhouette, others more room. The useful question is whether the garment sits comfortably and works with the rest of your clothes.

Start with the product's size guide, then check the shoulders, chest, sleeves and length together. A size letter on its own cannot tell you how a tee will fit.

First, understand the measurements

Body measurements describe your body: for example, the circumference around your chest. Garment measurements describe the finished item: for example, its width when laid flat. They are different measurements and should not be compared as though they were interchangeable.

The current CARVÉ Core tee size guides list body measurements. Measure around your chest just below your armpits, keeping the tape level and comfortably against your body. Follow the product's instructions for waist and height measurements too.

A flat T-shirt chest width is not your body chest circumference. Even doubling a flat width describes the garment, which includes room for movement. Use the same kind of measurement on both sides of any comparison.

Check the shoulders

On a conventional T-shirt, the shoulder seam usually sits near the edge of your shoulder. A seam pulled towards the neck, combined with tension across the upper back, may indicate that the tee feels too small for the fit you want.

A seam extending down the upper arm can be intentional on a dropped-shoulder or oversized design. Look at the product's intended cut before deciding that a different seam position means the wrong size.

Look for comfortable room through the chest

Stand naturally, move your arms forward and sit down. The fabric should allow these movements without uncomfortable pulling. Horizontal tension lines across the chest or persistent pulling beneath the arms can be a reason to try another size or cut.

Extra fabric is not automatically a problem. If you like a relaxed silhouette, some room is part of the effect. Check that it hangs in a way you enjoy rather than gathering awkwardly under your outer layers.

Consider sleeve length and width

Short sleeves can sit at different points on the upper arm. Pay attention to both the opening and the length: a narrow opening may feel restrictive even when the chest is comfortable, while a wider sleeve creates a looser outline.

Try bending and raising your arms. If the sleeve twists or rides up in a way you find uncomfortable, a different cut may help more than a simple size change.

Check the hem in the outfits you wear

Try the tee with your usual trousers. The rise of the waistband changes how much fabric sits below it, so a length that works with one pair may look different with another.

For an untucked tee, check the front, sides and back. When tucked, make sure there is enough length to stay comfortable as you move. Raise your arms to see whether the coverage still suits you.

Use a favourite tee as a reference

A tee you already like can help you describe your preferences. Lay it flat without stretching it and note the chest width, shoulder position and overall length. These are useful reference points if a new product provides equivalent garment measurements.

If the new product provides only body measurements, measure your body instead. Do not convert the old tee's flat dimensions into a supposed body size.

What if you are between sizes?

Follow the recommendation for the individual product. The current Core tee guide advises choosing the larger of the two when you fall between sizes. Check the available sizes on the colour you want, because the range can differ between products.

Sizing up can add room, but it does not necessarily reproduce a purpose-designed oversized silhouette. If you want a markedly different shoulder, sleeve or body shape, consider the cut as well as the size.

Your final fit check

  • Use the current guide for the exact product.
  • Compare body measurements with body measurements.
  • Check movement through the shoulders, chest and sleeves.
  • Try the hem with the trousers and layers you actually wear.
  • Review the delivery and returns information before ordering.
