How Often Should You Wash a Hoodie? A Wear-or-Wash Checklist
Share
A hoodie does not automatically need washing after every brief wear, but a fixed number of wears is a poor substitute for checking it. Wash it when it is dirty, smells, or has been through a sweaty outing. If it has had light use over a clean base and is still fresh, you can assess it for another wear.
The useful question is what happened while you were wearing it. An hour at a desk and an afternoon hauling boxes are both one wear on a tally, yet they leave you with different laundry decisions. Use this short checklist when the hoodie comes off, before it joins either the washing basket or tomorrow's outfit.
Why the sniff test is only a starting point
The American Cleaning Institute's laundry guidance says smell alone is not a reliable way to decide. Activity, fabric, weather and the way clothes have been worn all matter. Its advice distinguishes clothes worn next to the skin from outer clothing and calls for earlier cleaning when items are sweaty or visibly stained.
For a casual hoodie, treat that as a reason to consider the whole garment and the day it has had. There is no CARVÉ instruction promising a particular number of wears between washes.
Four checks before wearing it again
- Recall the activity. Was it a quiet morning, a warm commute or a physically active afternoon? If you sweated heavily in it, put it aside for washing rather than waiting for a visible mark.
- Look beyond the front. Check cuffs, the neckline, underarms and the inside of the hood. Turn the pocket out gently and look for food, tissues or other forgotten contents. A clean-looking chest does not tell you about the rest.
- Check for odour. Notice the areas near your skin as well as any cooking or smoke smells. If it smells unpleasant, choose another top and clean this one according to its label. Fragrance is not a substitute for washing.
- Think about the base layer. Wearing it over a fresh tee gives you a different starting point from wearing it directly against your body all day. It does not make the hoodie exempt from the other checks.
Do the checks as one decision. Passing the smell check cannot cancel a food stain, and wearing a tee underneath cannot cancel a sweaty journey.
Three ordinary days, three decisions
A short café visit: you wore the hoodie over a fresh tee, stayed comfortable and came home without spills. Check the garment, give it space to air and assess it again before rewearing. It need not go straight into a wash simply because you left the house.
A busy afternoon moving furniture: the same hoodie has been worn for hours and feels sweaty. Choose a clean replacement while this one is washed. The fact that you washed it yesterday is less useful than what happened today.
Lunch with a small sauce mark: deal with the mark promptly using a method suitable for the garment and print. The Cleaning Institute's linked guidance recommends timely washing, spot cleaning or professional cleaning as appropriate for stains. Do not leave it in the rewear pile while deciding whether it has reached a numerical limit.
Give a lightly worn hoodie a clear place
If it passes your checks, keep it somewhere you can find and reassess it. A separate hook or a clearly defined section of your rail can work better than a growing heap on a chair. Support the garment without stretching it and leave it space.
UK charity One Home's laundry advice suggests airing clothes between uses and making sure washed clothes are fully dry before storage. Airing can be part of the routine for a lightly worn layer; it does not remove the need to clean a dirty one.
Keep the system small. If three hoodies are waiting on the chair and you cannot remember which one was worn where, stop rotating them by guesswork. Make a decision about each before adding another.
When it needs washing, follow the actual instructions
The current Black and Oat Core CV Hoodies are listed as 300gsm certified organic cotton pullovers. Both give the same written care advice: wash cool and hang dry. Product details were checked on 25 October 2026.

Read the label inside your own garment for further instructions. This article does not assign it an unconfirmed machine temperature, stain treatment or tumble-drying setting. Our care-symbol guide helps with interpreting the label.
Allow time for drying before you plan the next outfit. Check the hood, cuffs and pocket area as well as the body before putting it away. If your preferred hoodie is still damp, choose another layer rather than changing its care routine to meet a deadline.
For more on the garment itself, read our Core hoodie feature. If you are choosing a new layer, browse CARVÉ hoodies and check whether the listed care fits your routine. For the one you already own, start with today's evidence: activity, marks, odour and how it was worn.
